Chapter 1

‘Dear Brooklyn, thank you for reaching out to us. We're currently done recruiting and have space available. We'll be looking forward to working with you in the future…..’

Brooklyn let out a deep and closed her Macbook. She looked at her phone to see no emails, she screamed in frustration, aaarrrrrgh!!!

Why does all this keep happening! I'm trying my best I really am but nothing's working, she sobbed gently. Dropping to her knees and resting her back on the left of the chair in her room.

What's the point if everything keeps going south? Why even try anymore she said aloud to herself as if expecting an answer.

KNOCK! KNOCK!!

Someone knocked on the door of her apartment and she feared to open up as she thought that might be the leasing agent.

She let the person knock for some while before standing up to go look through the key hole who it was.

The person was backing the door, a female, Brooklyn quickly grabbed the throw blanket on the couch and wrapped herself in it before opening the door.

This was going to be able to fool Miss Nia that she was sick, she made a sick face and then opened the door.

To her supriiand relief it was only but her mother,

“Are you sick chil?"

“Just a trick to fool the leasing agent that's all," Brooklyn waved her hands in the air letting her mom know she was alright

“ Well the trick be looking too real" Mrs Savan said with a sly humor

“Hahaha very funny mom," Brooklyn replied laughing sarcastically.

“Now why are you here?" Brook asked her mom with a stern look sitting on her face.

“A mother can't come to see her child anymore?" Mrs Maxwell asked wiping fake tears from her eyes.

“Mhm, yeah, she can't," Brooklyn said lowly but enough for her mother to hear

“Well if you must know your dad just got another sport car….,” my stomach turned as soon as I heard the new information.

I didn't know if it was the hunger doing too much or the fact that I'm barely surviving and the man who gave birth to me just got a new freakn' sport car.

“Bitter pill to swallow I know" Mrs Maxwell said while reaching for the magazine on the coffee table

" He loves his new family now, spends on them, leaving us to suffer,” she let out a dramatic low sigh, crossed her legs and closed the magazine

“What are you going to do?"

“What are my going to do? What can I do mom??? Go running to the same man who abandoned us when I was 10 to go be with some other woman?? What could I possibly do mom PLEASE TELL ME!”

My voice echoed in my partially empty apartment as I spoke. My voice was fully of anger, pain and disappointment. I couldn't understand why he would do this to us. He had never reached out even after he left, he never did.

Mom got up to hug me where I was standing. She led me to the couch and wrapped her arms around me.

" Well that's why you have me. The one who always stays by your side.” She kissed my forehead and raised my head to look up to her,

" Let's go get something to eat. You need to be taken out of this wormhole you call a house” Mrs Maxwell looked at the apartment in disgust.

" Well this wormhole is all I've got and I really do love it," I picked up my blanket and made my way into my room to get changed and go out with my mom for brunch.

The ride to the restaurant would have been a lovely one if mom wasn't on the phone with her new lover almost the entire ride.

“Oh of course I'd love to meet with you this weekend," she looked over to me covering the speaker of the phone and whispered, “guess who's gonna be busy this weekend!!?"

She squeeled in excitement while I rolled my eyes, smiled and turned to the window of the car, mom deserved all the happiness she was getting now.

We got to the restaurant and it was quite a view. We were ushered to the rooftop section which over saw the entire city, it was quite a view.

“Courtesy, my man” Mrs Maxwell smiled proudly while waving her phone to her daughter

" Aren't you the lucky princess now” I wish I could find a job as easy as mom found men who paid for her stuff.

We were served our meal and dug in really quick. I didn't have nothing to eat the night before so I was starving.

“You should come leave with me,"

“No mom. I can't be bumping into your suitors all day" I pointed the fork towards her and she laughed

“No, but honestly you should come leave with me. That wormhole you live in will never let you see life and its many opportunities clearly” she looked at me with a concerned look on her face.

" When I get a job I will” I didn't want to speak on the subject anylonger so thought of something quick to bring up,

" So how's James?" I gave her a wink and a smile, she laughed and wiped the side of her mouth before replying me,

“ Well he's fine. We don't speak anymore. He was a mistake, just like your Dad and I trashed him into the bin. Case closed" Mrs Maxwell didn't seem like she wanted to continue that conversation so Brooklyn let it slide.

The tow ate their meal in silence and got up to leave after they were done. They called the waiter for the bill which Brooklyn's mom covered and added a tip for the waiter.

They walked out of the rooftop section after taking some mother daughter pictures and proceeded to the elevator.

On approaching the elevator, Brooklyn clicked on the button

The doors gave way to reveal an enemy to both mother and child.
